Embracing Joy in Tough Times: Lessons from a Young Cancer Warrior
Hi, I’m Brenda.
I’m a mother, and the author of a book I’m still writing – It’s Only Hair.
I was the primary caregiver to my daughter Myra when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt’s Lymphoma at the age of six.
“It’s only hair” was a phrase she uttered when I tried to make her a wig during chemo, which she politely declined. Instead of getting hung up over the small things (like hair!), she chose to skip through streets and hospital hallways unashamed, unapologetic, and undeniably joyful as she embraced the art of living while fighting the biggest battle of her life.
This space was created to be the voice of comfort, assurance, and guidance I so badly needed during that time. Now, I hope my voice can light the path for others going through the same. And really, for anyone navigating life’s hardest moments.
Because the lesson Myra taught me wasn’t just about staying happy in the darkest time.
She showed me that when we shift the way we think, when we step outside the box of how we’ve been conditioned to suffer, it’s possible to live joyfully, and make light out of even the darkest situations.
